National Take A Hike Day

National Take a Hike Day is November 17th! We’re excited to celebrate with our dogs, and we want to help you celebrate with yours. Phoenix is known for its many hiking opportunities around the city varying in difficulty. You and your dog are sure to find one you love, maybe a new favorite spot!

The Best Hiking Spots For Dogs

Papago Park is the perfect place for beginners. It’s an easy 2 mile loop with a flat trail. There’s plenty desert and city views, as well as caves. This is a great place to bring a new dog that isn’t accustomed to hiking long trails.

Sunrise Trail is known to be a quick and easy trail for hikers of all experience levels. Once at the top, you’ll get a 360 degree view of the valley. There isn’t a lot of shade on this trail, so remember to wear, and reapply, sunscreen on this hike.

Tom’s Thumb Trail is a short 4.2 miles, perfect for a day hike with your pup. The beginning of this hike is mostly switchbacks, but you’ll experience true desert scenery we all know and love.

Pinnacle Peak is a short hike that has a few ups and downs on the path. This is a moderate hike for dogs that have an average amount of experience hiking.

Prepare Your Dog

Your dog should prepare for a hike just like you do. Make sure you bring enough water for the both of you, as well as snacks and treats to keep your dog’s energy level high during the day. If your pack starts to get heavy, it could be time to invest in a dog pack that they can wear themselves. If you’re unsure of the terrain on the trail, dog booties to protect their paws are highly recommended. Always start small, you don’t want to over work your dog. Make sure they’re comfortable on short hikes, and slowly work your way up to day trips on the trail. Always remember a first aid kit, with items that can help you and your dog.

Autumn Weather

While it doesn’t get that cold in Phoenix, it’s recommended that you dress in layers, especially if you’re starting early in the morning. You can always take layers off. Even though it feels cooler, you still need to apply sunscreen to your body. You should get your dog their own sunscreen as well. Most trails don’t provide enough shade to stay out of the sun.

Hiking in Phoenix is finally enjoyable again, and our dogs are very happy about that! Follow our tips to ensure a safe and memorable day on the trail. If you have any further questions about hiking with your dog, visit our website to contact us.
