Keeping your pets safe should begin at home, so you’re always prepared. A pet first aid kit is a must have for emergencies. This can be stored at home, or made portable to take on trips, hikes, and dog parks. You can use this blog as a checklist to build your own pet first aid kit.
Important Phone Numbers
Putting important contact information in an easy to find location is the first step to take. This information is important for pet sitters, or if your first aid kit is portable. You’ll want to include information for your dog, and emergency contacts as well. This could be:
Veterinarian's name and phone number - PVC (602) 559-5500
Emergency veterinary clinic
Poison Control Center - 888-4ANI-HELP (888-426-4435)
Your emergency contacts
If you are leaving this for a pet sitter, be sure to include your contact information as well. If you are unsure which emergency clinic is in your area, ask your veterinarian.
Supplies
There are supplies that are similar to what you would find in your own first aid kit, that you should also include in your pets. However, they must be pet safe. The supplies you’ll want to have on hand are:
Gauze
Non stick bandages or clean cloth
Adhesive tape to secure bandages
(It is important to note that you should not use bandages that you use on yourself, like Band-Aid brand)
Extra Leash
Water
What you should consult your vet about…
Things like hydrogen peroxide, and milk of magnesia induce vomiting. While these are useful tools in some situations, you should ALWAYS consult your vet before using these.
