How to Be a Responsible Pet Owner

February is Responsible Pet Owners Month! Whether you are considering getting a new pet, have recently adopted, or are a seasoned pet parent with a senior pooch or kitty, here are some characteristics of a responsible pet owner.

  • Be sure your pet wears a collar and current ID tag.
  • Spay/Neuter your pets.
  • Microchip your pet and keep up to date photos handy.
  • Enroll your puppy (or older dog) in appropriate level training.
  • Set calendar reminders for annual vet exam/dental cleaning.
  • Ensure your pet gets regular vaccines to avoid preventable diseases.
  • Learn and recognize animal body language to avoid fights and bites.
  • Ensure your pet is safe from mischief and boredom when you're not home. Crate train or check the fence lines and gates for security.
  • Groom your pet frequently, checking for ticks/fleas.
  • Respect your neighbors: pick up after your pet, curb your dog and beware of your dog's barking.
  • Protect your pet from undue stress like visitors, fireworks and rowdy children.
  • Educate yourself on your pet's medical needs through various life stages and medical conditions.
  • Know breed traits, temperament, health issues and exercise needs and follow up with appropriate care.
