January is National Walk Your Pet Month and it's also a time where most humans are making resolutions to exercise more. So, we can also say that this national holiday is for both four and two-legged creatures. Let's make walking fun, but with a plan in mind. Here are some tips on walking your dog (that also can apply to you)!
Commit to a Time: morning, afternoon, night - whenever you fancy the perfect walking time, stick to it. All creatures thrive on routine, so set one for walking. This also eliminates the excuses! Keep in mind though that there are breeds who need multiple walks or longer walks in the day.
Choose the Right Walking Materials: i.e. collar, leash, harness. For humans, it can mean a good pair of shoes, socks and even clothing. Having the right materials gives you motivation and also makes the walk more bearable for everyone involved. I mean, have you ever wore uncomfortable shoes? That's a deal breaker for sure!
Be a Responsible Dog Owner: this really means one thing - pick up your dog's waste. Yes, scoop that poop. And while this might not technically pertain to humans, it's still a reminder to throw trash where it belongs and to pick up after yourself as well.
Get Creative: nobody likes taking the same route everyday, it just becomes monotonous! Get creative and vary the walk routes you take. Be adventurous and explore new parks that have both humans and dogs in them.
Be Present: unplug, breathe in fresh air, be present and put down your phone! Make the walk a special moment between you and your dog. Take in the scenery around you and appreciate what you have, especially your dog by your side!
