Tips to Celebrate National Pet Day

National Pet Day is a day to celebrate the four legged friends in our life. Whether that be with toys or a long walk, today is all about them. Use one of these tips on April 11th to show some extra love to your dog or cat.

1.       Bring home new toys
Whether for chewing or playing fetch, it’s no secret our pets love toys. While we usually try to limit ourselves to only a few new toys every month, this day is the perfect excuse to spoil our pets. Take a trip to your local pet store and load up on their favorite toys. Kong balls for the pups, catnip for our feline friends!

2.       Visit their favorite dog park
Even if their favorite spot is on the other side of town, take them to the best dog park. Bring a few new toys to play fetch or run around with. They’ll love the change of scenery and the extra room to play.

3.       Let them on the couch for the day
Today is the day to be lax on the rules. Let your dog on the couch or your cat drink from the faucet. Whatever they aren’t allowed to do, you can let them get away with it for the day as a way to say “I love you.” If you don’t acknowledge the behavior as “good,” they won’t think it’s the new norm and it won’t set back any training you two have done together.

4.       Give them more time to play
If you’re tired after a long day of work or have a long to-do list waiting for you at home, try to put the less important things on hold for the day. National Pet Day should be spent with your pets, so why not let them play for 30 more minutes.

5.       Take them for a car ride
If your dog enjoys car rides, this is an added treat for the day! If you are planning on going to the dog park or a grooming appointment, take the long route and let your pup enjoy the fresh air through an open window. Don’t forget the doggy seat belt harness!

6.       Give them extra treats
This one speaks for itself – and it will probably be the one best received by your dog or cat. Everybody loves a tasty treat, and just this one day it’s okay to give a little extra. Just make sure you read the package, so you don’t over do it and cause an accidental stomach ache.

7.       Volunteer at your local shelter
National Pet Day should be inclusive for all pets, even those without a home. If you have time, set up a day during the weekend where you can go volunteer at a local animal shelter. They are always in need of someone to walk dogs, play with cats or clean kennels and bedding. If you don’t have time, consider donating money or supplies to keep the pets healthy and comfortable.
